The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources declared Sri Lanka's largest butterfly - the "Sri Lanka Bird Wing" (Troides darsius) as the National Butterfly of Sri Lanka, under the recommendations of the Butterfly Expert Group of the Ministry.

This is Sri Lankan largest butterfly with wingspan of about 6 to 7 inches,uncommon butterfly found through island,jungles as well as open home garden but rear in north part of the island but it’s widespread in sea level forest & higher hills, most common in wet zone,sexes are differ slightly, male merrily larger & colorful, usually flies high elevation,Birdwing take to the air early in the morning,
