The authorities are to launch a head count of the elephant population through out the country aimed at finding ways to save the animals from extinct, a senior official said today.

 

"The idea is to ascertain the exact number of elephants and their places of concentration so that plans could be drawn up to provide safe areas where they would not come into conflict with the people," Director General (Parks) Dr. Chandrawansa Pathiraja said.

 

The program which will be funded by the United States and India will be initiated by early August this year, he said.

 

At the moment there is an estimated 5000 plus elephants known to roam the country,
